Knowing God: a new, old commandment

The reality of God was never something I’ve really questioned. Sure, I’ve doubted the nature of God, the person of God, and my relationship to this God. In the end, the deciding question for me was whether this divine being would have any implications for my life.

Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Focus: Deuteronomy 6:4-9

There is a lot that you can tell about a person through the lifestyle that they choose to live. A survey of a person’s lifestyle can reveal a great deal about their values, their principles, and their priorities in life. A single businessman that lives in a studio apartment, with three cars in the garage (a saloon, convertible and off-roader), at the clubs and bars each weekend with a different girl on his arm each night… A married mechanic with three kids that lives in a three bedroom house, with one old rusty car, serving at the soup kitchen every Friday night, watching TV late at night with the kids on Saturday night, spoiling the wife to a special night out on Sunday… Extremes, maybe, but you get my point.
