Focus: Numbers 35:6-15

In the life of any society, there are legal statutes in place to protect the livelihood of its people. There are enforcement agencies (e.g. police) which operate to maintain the livelihood which people expect from their social order. When these social structures are kept in place, it allows for a society to be confident as it seeks thrive and mature as a community. When these social structures are broken down, society struggles with issues of fear and anarchy locking down its growth rather than encouraging it.

Focus: Leviticus 23:33-43; Numbers 29:12-38

Each country has its own special holidays: the days of independence, unity, political significance, end of wars, etc. The ancient nation of Israel is no different. Throughout the year they had various festivals which they celebrated, one of them was their ‘Feast of Tabernacles’ (aka Booths). This celebration was to remember their freedom, their release from slavery under the yoke of Egypt, most of all, God who orchestrated and prepared the way for the people of Israel.

Focus: Numbers 26:52-27:11

Today, we hear stories of families fighting over the inheritance at a person’s death. Where the will does not satisfy one party, lawsuits break out between rival factions and the settlement of an estate may take months, if not years. The reasons: “It’s not fair! Why should they get that? Why should they get more than me? I was the one who cared for the old geezer…” There’s plenty of TV dramas to fill our imaginations.

There are people in this world who are driven by a passion, motivated by a cause, moved by a need. Nothing you do can sway them from their path and they stick to it fervently until the task at hand is complete. They have one focus, one goal, one purpose and nothing is going to get in their way or change their mind. To them, there is little else as important as what is before them and they will pursue it with all that they are.

You don’t get to your destination as fast because you keep to the speed limit; your music playlist isn’t as long as everyone else because you pay for your music; you can’t keep up-to-date with the latest games and movies because you don’t use torrents; you don’t have that dream holiday house because you fill in your tax return properly…

Numbers: giving out of what was given…

Focus: Numbers 18:21-32

In some corporate businesses, employees are encouraged to buy shares in the company. To encourage the practice, employees are given shares each year in the company as part of their wages. By doing so, the company seeks to encourage its employees to invest further by buying more shares in the company. In some sense, such a practice results in the employee paying their own wage. It encourages productivity and ownership of the company by its own employees.
